SUMMARY
KUALA LUMPUR: Mohd Zubiar Zainol of Kedah emerged as the star performer in the opening leg of the SportExcel-NSC-Milo National Junior Circuit Artistic Championships held at the Bukit Jalil Sports Centre yesterday. Zubiar, a 16 year old student at the Bukit Jalil Sports School, was ecstatic over his four gold performances. He won the individual all-round title. He also emerged as the champion in the rings, parallel and horizontal bars events. “This is my biggest ever gold haul in a junior meet. My previous best, was a three-gold haul in last year’s MSSM Championships,” Zubiar exclaimed happily. He explained that he had to practise six hours per day at the gymnasium under the supervision of a personal coach from Russia. He had to sacrifice his leisure time like watching television and going to the cinemas. Furthermore, he had to keep to a strict diet to be fit for the championships. He remarked that all his hard work had paid off. Zubiar, who also won a silver and two bronzes in the recent SUKMA, is now eyeing for more glory in next month’s ASEAN Schools Championship in Singapore. “I hope to win at least one gold in the championships,” Zubiar said.
